The following biography is from Jim Sazevich of St. Paul, Minnesota, who has done genealogical research on the William Hillyer, Sr. family and "would like to offer this information to you for inclusion on your list of artist's biographies."


William Hillyer, Jr., was born March 1815, in Portsmouth, England, the
son of William and Sarah (Earwicker) Hillyer. William, Jr. was brought
to the United States at age four, and in 1822 his family settled in New
York City.

He was taught the trade of carpentry by his father, but in his youth his love for art blossomed, and in his teen years he was already busy sketching the portraits of his Lower Manhattan neighbors. From th   ...  Displaying 750 of 1359 characters.
