Biography   William Hanington

William J. Hanington and his brother Henry Hanington began as commercial artists in New York City about 1832. Eventually they  produced and exhibited all over the country a large number of spectacular moving dioramas on such subjects as The Deluge, Conflagration of Moscow, New York Fire of Dec. 16, 1835, Stellar Universe, a moving telescopic diorama, The Creation and Crimean War.  Venues for their dioramas between 1832 and 1856 included New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Charleston, New Orleans and Cincinnati.

Henry Hanington's name disappears from the record after 1856, but William was listed until 1870 as a transparent painter, decorative painter, enameler and glass stainer. In 1856, he exhibited s   ...  Displaying 750 of 1042 characters.
