Riess, William J. (1856-1918)
A painter of western scenes and Indian life, died suddenly at his temporary studio in Chicago, March 30, 1919. He was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1856, and was a pupil of the Berlin Art Academy and Von Werner.
He went to Indianapolis to live in 1884. His awards included a gold and silver medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition* in San Francisco in 1915.
He is represented by Wyoming Desert in the John Herron Art Institute,* Indianapolis, Indiana.
