Born in London, England, William Armitage was a painter and muralist of Biblical subjects who settled in Utah in the 1870s. In 1881, he became one of the founders of the Utah Art Association. He painted in temples for the Church of the Latter Day Saints in Logan and Salt Lake City, and from 1880 to 1882, taught at the University of Deseret, which became the University of Utah.
He died on a visit to San Francisco in November of 1890. His work is in the collections of the Latter Day Saints Church in Utah and Independence, Missouri.
