William Leon Stacks (1928-1991) was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1928. In 1943 when he was 15 years old, he became the youngest member ever elected to the Rockport Art Association*, Rockport, Massachusetts.
According to a friend of his, Clyde Williams of Beaufort, South Carolina, after two years of study Stacks was apprenticed to William Lester Stevens (1888-1969) for three years, then to Lloyd Wesley Broome to learn more about color, and then to William J. Potter (1883-1964) to learn the use of a palette knife*.
Stacks returned to North Carolina, earning a living as a landscape painter, art conservator and sculptor. In a newspaper interview in the early 1970s, he described his sculpture as 'colorful abstractions made
