Biography William Snyder
A descendant of German immigrants, William McKendree Snyder studied with George Inness, Albert Bierstadt and William Hunt. He was born in Liberty, Indiana, and lived in Madison and Columbus, Indiana. Snyder fought in the Civil War on the Union side and reportedly survived the infamous Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp. Snyder was one of the first to paint the landscape of Brown County, Indiana.

One of the earliest artists to paint in Brown County, Indiana, William Snyder was a landscape painter from Madison, Indiana. He specialized in dense forests, especially beech trees. His very detailed style was influenced by the Hudson River School.
