Biography William Ruloff Kip
A descendant of an old Dutch family which had lived at Rhineback on Hudson for generations, William Ruloff Kip was the son of William Bergh and Sarah (Spies) Kip. His father was a New York lawyer.
After the death of his father in 1888, William spent 1888-1889 in England and Europe. In 1890-93 he attended St. John’s Military Academy in Sing Sing (now Ossining, New York. Graduating from Westminster School in Dobbs Ferry in 1894, he then entered Yale Scientific School that fall but left at Christmas time to enter Art School. After three years of study Kip left for Paris where he lived for three years and studied art under Lionel Waldon.
