Born in Broome County, New York, he was the son of the Reverend and Mrs. William Samuel Davenport. He attended Union Academy (Union Endicott High school) and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1890. Shortly after graduation, he went to Paris, France, and began practicing medicine. There he met James NcNeill Whistler, who became his friend and teacher and encouraged him as a painter.
