William Thorn Kissel Jr., a former stockbroker who became a sculptor, died of pneumonia Feb. 10 at the Brightwood retirement community in Lutherville. He was 86.
A great-great-grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad, Mr. Kissel was born and raised in New York City.
He was a 1939 graduate of Choate School and began his college studies at Harvard University.
In 1943, he interrupted college studies to serve in the Navy as a test pilot, and later served on aircraft carriers in the Pacific, attaining the rank of lieutenant.
