William Traies was born in Crediton, Devon in 1789. Traies took inspiration from the beauty of his surroundings and quickly honed his craft as a landscape painter. He captured the extensive views of his beloved County with great technical accuracy all the while exhibiting a careful handling of paint, particularly in the sky and foliage, culminating in fine celebrations of nature.
Traies' work was not widely exhibited during his lifetime, only exhibiting a handful of times in the RHA, however his landscapes furnish the walls of distinguished British Galleries today, namely the Victoria & Albert Museum.
