Biography Wolfgang Adam Topffer
Wolfgang-Adam Toepffen (20 May 1766- 10 August1847) specialized in landscapes and watercolors. He was the son of master tailor from Schweinfurt, Germany, who had come to work in Switzerland, and decided to stay and become a citizen.
After showing some talent for art, at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to an engraver, and late studied at the ‘Geneva Society of Arts’. He worked as an engraver in Lausanne for a short time, and then went on an Alpine expedition with Horace-Benedict de Saussure making sketches.
In 1786, members of the Society, impressed with his work, recommended that he go and study in Paris, and offered a scholarship. He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he studied with Nicolas Delauney (1739-1792), and
