Biography Woodhull Adams
Woodhull Adams was one of the most active and prolific members of the Sketch Club formed in 1892 in Newark, New Jersey. In 1893, as the dominant art organization in the city, they began holding annual exhibitions, solely of work by the members, which included a few nonresident painters such as Adams and George Inness, Jr.
Adams was primarily a resident of Old Lyme (1912, 1917-1921), Connecticut where he was part of the colony that gathered at the grand if slightly run-down mansion of Miss Florence Griswold. In 1899 Florence Griswold opened her timeworn family home to artists searching for a quiet country retreat where they could rejuvenate their spirits and find sources of inspiration. It rapidly became a mecca for successive waves
