Biography Zofia Stryjenska
Zofia Stryjenska, a Polish female painter, illustrator and stage designer, was one of the most vivid artists of Poland's 20 years of independence after WW I. After she briefly studied in Cracow's schools for female artists, she left for Munich where, in a male disguise and using her brother's passport, she studied from 1911-1912.
She came out in 1912 in the Cracow's Fine Arts Society with a series of works based upon Polish folk tales. Stryjenska became internationally famous in 1925 at the Decorative Art Exhibition of Paris where she displayed six huge panels symbolizing months. In her gouaches and watercolors she was inspired by folk legends, beliefs and lifestyles.
