Painter Evangeline Batten originally intended to be a sculptor. She studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Inst. with Arthur Mathews (received a lifetime scholarship and a grant for further study under Rodin in Paris).

In the late 1920s she and her husband moved to Europe, where they lived in France, Italy, Spain and on the Island of Mallorca. She returned to Southern California after a brief stay in Taxco, Mexico and the death of her husband. Per Who Was Who in American Art.
