Joseph Brzenk was born 28 December 1901 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a young man he attended the Milwaukee State Normal School where he studied Fine Arts for four years. The School was formed in 1911 from both the Milwaukee School of Arts and the Wisconsin School of Fine and Applied Arts, and early in 1927 renamed Milwaukee State Teachers College.
On May 23rd, 1923 Joseph Brzenk resided at 1053 2nd Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin when he submitted an application for enrollment at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' (PAFA) Summer School in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. On the PAFA's application question "What use do you expect to make of your art study", Brzenk wrote "I expect to be a portrait painter and landscape painter.
