Edward W. Gentz was born on July 26, 1881 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to parents who had immigrated from East Prussia in 1869. Gentz studied at the School of the Chicago Art Institute, the Milwaukee School of Art, studied with John Carlson at the Art Students League in New York City and studied with John Wicker of the Detroit Art Institute.
According to a newspaper article dated November 25, 1929 published in the Grand Rapids Herald, Gentz had exhibited two of his paintings, Going to Grandma's and Melting Snow at the New York show of Independent Artists, both of which were favorably reviewed by two French critics and were reproduced in two French art periodicals.
