Born in Bloomington, IL on July 14, 1902. Velma Hay moved to southern California in 1936. She then began exhibiting in Brawley and Imperial Valley and served as art chairman of the Brawley Women's Club in 1938-40. During the 1940s she studied with Dong Kingman and at the Chouinard and Otis Art Institutes. In 1949 she wed artist Ben Messick and operated the Messick-Hay Studio in Long Beach. An oil painter, she produced canvases which were both mystical and Impressionist. She was a resident of Apple Valley, CA until her death on Oct. 9, 2001. Member: Long Beach AA.
