Charles M. Plein was born on August 29, 1870, in Bildstock, Alsace-Lorraine, the son of a bookshop proprietor who encouraged his education. After academic studies at the Metz cloister, Charles studied china painting at the firm of Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Rhineland.
Further study occurred in Munich, where Charles also worked as a military photographer, taking pictures of fortresses and other features of military interest. He was employed by the imperial German government, which occupied Alsace-Lorraine at the time. In a uniqu
