Biography of Charles M. Plein (1870-1920)
The following biographical information has been submitted to by Dr. Phyllis J. Lepke, great grand niece of the artist.
Charles M. Plein was born on August 29, 1870, in Bildstock, Alsace-Lorraine, the son of a bookshop proprietor who encouraged his education. After academic studies at the Metz cloister, Charles studied china painting at the firm of Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Rhineland.
Further study occurred in Munich, where Charles also worked as a military photographer, taking pictures of fortresses and other features of military interest.
