Keith Appel is a regionalist Alaska artist known for his large-scale public works.
He arrived in Anchorage in 1960 and has been a constant presence on the art scene there since that time. After training at Mankato State University in Minnesota, he taught art in the Anchorage school district from 1960 to 1967 and then served as art director for the district from 1968 to 1970. Appel then joined the faculty of the University of Alaska in Anchorage, remaining there until 1981.
Since that time he has worked as a full-time artist, using varied materials and imagery. In the 1970s he began using acrylic and enamel on Plexiglas, as in 'Lunar Solstice' (1974, Anchorage Museum), and later enamel on steel. In the mid-1980s Appel's made a tran
