Biography Michel Carlin
Michel Carlin was born in 1935. He was a child in 1943 when Chambéry (Savoy), his birthplace came under bombardment during the war. Terrified, he discovered terribly mutilated corpses in his familiar landscape, which became a defining experience for him. Carlin later wrote that this was undoubtedly the day he became a painter.
He left for Paris in 1954; without financial resource, he took refuge at the Academy of “la Grande Chaumière” where he drew nude models all day. Drafted in 1955 to fight in the war of Algeria, he painted mutilated bodies and Melouza’s mass grave.
