Biography Rosa Corder
Rosa Frances Corder was a painter of portraits and racehorse scenes. She
studied under Felix Moschelles and Frederick Sandys and had a studio in
London and Newmarket. She was described by the famous actress, Ellen
Terry as "one of those plain beautiful women who are far more attractive
than some of the pretty ones. She had wonderful hair like a fair pale
veil, a white waxen face and a very good figure."
Corder was a friend of
the great American artist, James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). His
full-length portrait of her "Arrangement in Black & Brown" is one of
the treasures of the Frick Collection, New York. Works by Corder are in
the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Keble Colleg
