William Gillard was born in England circa 1812. He first appeared as an exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1831 and exhibited again between 1841-48 and 1860-1876. His listed addresses included Bristol, Dublin, Chester, Liverpool, and Dalkey.
He painted landscapes many of Welsh scenery, as well as still life, game pieces and portraits. A portrait by him hangs in the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin.
He worked in Chester and Liverpool. He was resident in Dublin
in 1860; in Belfast in 1864; and again in Dublin from 1866 to 1870 at 60 Middle Abbey Street. He
exhibited a total of 72 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1831 and 1876.
