Biography Erwin Graumann
Erwin Graumann was born in Bielefeld in 1902 and moved to Berlin in
1923 to study at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste - initially under
Hans Meid and later under Karl Hofer, becoming a student in his master
class from 1929 to 1932. His works were already included in several
exhibitions at that time, including those at the Berliner Sezession as
well as a group exhibition presented jointly by the galleries of
Flechtheim and Cassirer. Graumann was prohibited from working under the
Nazi regime and he left Germany in 1935, initially settling in
Copenhagen and, from 1936, in Paris. After his internment in France in
1939 and 1941, he successfully fled to Switzerland in 1943 and lived in
