Biography Marthe Guillain
Belgian painter Marthe Guillain (1890-1974) studied at Charleroi then in Paris in the Cormon workshop. After the war, she married Médard Maertens, with which she exhibits in Paris at the Salon des Independants. Back in Belgium in 1935, she exhibited regularly at the Galerie Giroux in Brussels.
She then starts to travel. With Fauvist accents and abstract lyricism Marthe Guillain resonates in his paintings the enchanting atmosphere of the African continent for which it fascinates. His stylized human figures silhouetted against a tan background.
It also feels in his work the influence of Kandinsky.
