John Hardwicke Lewis (1842-1927)
Painter, illustrator. Born in Hyderabad, India in 1842. John Hardwicke first studied painting with his father, Frederic Christian Lewis, and continued in Paris with Thomas Couture.
From 1875 to 1885, he was in San Francisco as an illustrator for newspapers. After returning to Europe, he was active in London where he was a member of the Royal Academy and Society of British Artists. He exhibited portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes of California at the Royal Academy until 1899.
After working in London for several years, he moved to Switzerland and died in Veylaux in 1927.
