Francisco Martinez

 (1715/18 - 1757)
Francisco Martinez was active/lived in Mexico.  Francisco Martinez is known for religious themed painting, gilding.

Biography   Francisco Martinez

Francisco Martínez, in his lifetime, was one of the most popular painters in colonial Mexico.  He also functioned as a gilder associated with Jerónimo de Balbás, the Spanish architect who brought the churriguesque style to Mexico.

A notary of the inquisition (or Holy Office) from at least 1718, Martínez used the post to generate commissions. His best-known works are the two scenes from the Life of Saint Lawrence, signed and dated 1736, now in the Mexico city cathedral, and a group of scenes from the Life of the Virgin, acquired by the Davenport Museum of art.

Around 1754, Martínez joined José de Ibarra and other Mexican artists establishing a shortlived academy in the capital.

He died in 1757.
