Victor Louis Merlin, French, died 1892
Remembered only as a painter of portraits, Victor Louis Merlin left few clues pertaining to his life. It is known that he was born in Lille, France; that he went to Paris where he received his art instruction and spent the remainder of his life.
His instructor in Paris was Leon Cogniet, an Officer of the Legion of Honor, a painter of historical subjects and known as a devoted teacher. Cogniet had been appointed Professor of Drawing in the Lyceum of Louis le Grand and in the Polytechnic School of Paris.
