Biography John Ross Murphy
John Ross Murphy was born on the 14th of July 1827, in Dublin. He was a pupil of
the renowned British marine artist William Clarkson Stanfield RA
(1793-1867), and the landscape artist Edmund Gill (1820-1894).
spent his early life at sea, like the contemporary marine artist Richard
Brydges Beechey, he became a sea captain. He worked with Edwin Hayes
RHA (1820-1904) and John Faulkner RHA (1830-1888).
He exhibited 16 works
at the RHA between 1873 and 1884 from an address at 10 Ellis's Quay
Dublin. He has also exhibited in Liverpool.
He died on the 6th of September, 1892.
