Biography John Ross Murphy
John Ross Murphy was born on 14th July 1827 in Dublin, he was a pupil of
the renowned British marine artist William Clarkson Stanfield RA
(1793-1867) and the landscape artist Edmund Gill (1820-1894).Having
spent his early life at sea, like his contemporary marine artist Richard
Brydges Beechey, he became a sea captain. He worked with Edwin Hayes
RHA (1820-1904) and John Faulkner RHA (1830-1888). He exhibited 16 works
at the RHA between 1873 and 1884 from an address at 10 Ellis's Quay
Dublin, he also exhibited in Liverpool. He died 6th September, 1892.
