Biography Otto Niemeyer-Holstein
Otto Niemeyer-Holstein was accepted by Switzerland as a disabled ex-serviceman in 1916. He
began painting in the artist circle of Ascona, Ticino. He lived in
Switzerland until 1925, in between he studied at the Academy on Kassel.
He moved to Berlin in 1926 and in 1929 he was taught by A. Segall in
Paris. He moved to Usedom in 1939, where he built the 'Usedom Painting
School' together with Otto Manigk, Herbert Wegehaupt and Karen Schacht.
The National Socialists removed his works from all the museums. His
breakthrough followed in 1961 with an exhibition of a comprehensive
overview of his work at the Nationalgalerie in East Berlin. He was voted
