The artist Abraham Arnold Plagemann was born in Gustavia on the Swedish colony St. Barthélemy in the Caribbean as the twelfth child of a sibling group of fourteen where his father, Conrad Ludwig, brother of Pharmacist Carl Fredrik Plagemann, the duty manager. Their sister, Albertina, was married to Frederick Carl Ulrich (1808-1868), Governor of St. Barthélemy. At a young age Plagemann went to sea as a sailor, and "midschipman" on US vessels. In 1844, he came the first time to Sweden. In 1846 he took örlogstjänst for the United States in the war against Mexico (May 1846-February 1848).
