Biography Christoph Schwarz
Christoph Schwarz is most notable as a proponent of Venetian painting in
southern Germany in the 16th century. Schwarz traveled to Italy
between 1570-1573, and the influence of his Venetian sojourn is evident
in the color palette of Christ on the way to Cavalry. Schwarz
enjoyed commercial success during his lifetime and was a court painter
in his native Munich during the latter part of his career. Christ on the way to Cavalry was most likely executed after 1580, when the artist was painting small devotional scenes on copper.
