Biography Sidney Smith
Born in Belfast to Alexander Smith, a draper, Sidney Smith went on to receive his education at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He studied privately with Robert Boyd Morrison and attended evening classes at the Belfast College of Art where he met fellow artist Dan O'Neill beginning a long friendship.
His first painting Market Day was included in the 1938 Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1947 he painted his first mural at the British Restaurant in Victoria Street, Belfast, and he continued to use this medium throughout his career.
