Biography Arthur Wasse
Arthur Wasse was born in Manchester and moved to Germany in 1875, where he attended the Munich School and learned under the great masters Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886) and Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907). Since 1895, the painter established in Rothenburg and regularly commuted between England and Germany.
His charming townscapes of Rothenburg are deeply related to the Romantic style and contribute to the documentation of the city's history. In 1940, Rothenburg received an extensive donation of paintings initiated by the painter's widow. On the occasion of Wasse's 150th anniversary a great retrospective was held in the municipal museum.
