Biography Jean Gassies
Jean-Bruno Gassies was born in Bordeaux on 25th October 1786. He was a French history, genre and landscape painter.
Gassies was a member of the French navy who was captured and
imprisoned by the English. It is thought that it was after his release
from captivity that he had the opportunity to explore England and
Scotland, and developed a love for the British landscape.
Gassies was greatly taken by the English School of painting of the
early nineteenth century, and he returned several times to visit in
1821, 1824 and 1826. Gassies was a pupil of the neo-Classical French
artist Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) in Paris.
