Jean-Francois-Emmanuel Böhm, born in Ypres (Ieper) on 26 December 1801, was the third child of Stanislas Böhm, a teacher of Polish origin. François snatched all the first prizes at the Ypres Academy, such as the first prize for painting in 1828. In the meantime, he married young in 1819. His son Auguste was born in that same year, and, like his father, would make his career in painting.
At the end of 1828, François left for Paris with his wife and child where he is said to have attended classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and also acquired experience in the studios of artists like Léon Cogniet, Pierre Cicéri, and François Kinsoen. Only in 1
