Biography Gretel Haas-Gerber
Gretel Haas-Gerber was born in Offenburg, where she received her early
artistic training from Adolf Mangold, between 1920 and 1923. She was
then able to attend the Badische Landeskunstschule in Karlsruhe as one
of the first accepted women, until she moved to Munich in 1925, where
she studied at the Academy under Max Dörner and Hugo von Habermann.
Gretel Haas-Gerber’s early works are deeply inspired by her great idol
Karl Hofer and may be classified between ‘New Objectivity’ and
‘Expressive Realism’. Between 1933 and 1948, Gretel Haas-Gerber was
ostracized under the National Socialists, so that her career was
abandoned until the 1950s, when she began her second creative period. In
