The following information comes from the obituary in the South Durham Herald, West Hartlepool, Saturday, January 15, 1876 and was provided by Mr. Grenville Davies:
Mr. T. R. Hofland, who was well-known in West Hartlepool as a water-colour artist of high ability, died on Sunday, aged 58. The deceased was a man of education and refinement, but for the past few years he had given way to intemperance, and he died in humble lodgings in Stranton in the greatest poverty.
