Living and working in Marseille, France, Jean-Baptiste Hugues, also known as Jean Hugues, was born in 1849 and died in 1930.
He was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1875, won several medals at the Salon (1878, 1881, 1882) and the last Universal Exhibition, and was appointed Chevalier in the order of the Legion of Honor in 1889.
His most famous work entitled La Muse de la Source, executed in 1900 in marble and bronze is housed at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
