Biography   Emile Charles Labbe


Émile Charles Labbé was born in 1820 in Mussy-sur-Seine, France and died in 1885 in Algiers, Algeria.  Labbé was a disciple of Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps and became a landscape painter.  He exhibited at the Salons of 1836 and 1876.  During the 1840's Labbé developed himself as a painter of oriental subjects.  He traveled extensively in the Middle East and North Africa and received a commission to decorate the palace of the Sultan in Constantinople, Turkey.  In 1876 he settled in Algiers.  From 1881 until his death Labbé was the first director of the École des Beaux Arts of Algiers.
