Gaspar Lacroix was born in Turin from French parents. He was a student of Jean-Baptiste Corot, and began exhibiting at the French Salon in 1834 with Vue prise à Aulnay and participated until 1878 with various landscapes of Auvergne, Pyrénées-Orientales, of the Lyonnais, Dauphiné (Crémieu), and of Provence where he traveled with Corot in 1836 to Montpellier. At the Salon, he received a third-place medal in 1842 and second place medals in 1843 and 1848.
However, the surroundings of Paris were the primary sources of his inspiration: the banks of the Marne, the forest of Fontainebleau and Palaiseau and the park of the Gigoux villa.
