Biography Lorna Fencer Napurrula
Lorna Fencer Napurrula was an artist of color-rich paintings, many of them with acrylics. She was born at Yartulu Yartulu in the Tanami desert in Central Australia and grew up in the Warlpiri culture. A leader of her tribe, she was custodian of inherited land in Yumurrpa south of the Granites Mine Area of the Tanami Desert.,
In 1949, she with many others of her tribe were forced into settlement at Lajamanu at Hookers Creek near the country of the Gurindji, 250 miles north of their own land. In spite of this, she remained committed to her own cultural identity and, asserting herself in this role, directed much of her art talent to decorative body designs for women's ceremonials.
