John Richard Coke Smyth (the hyphen was only added by his children) was the only son of Elizabeth Coke and Richard Smyth, Elizabeth subsequently marrying a Richard Baker.
More commonly known as Coke Smyth, with which name he signed his works, he has been mistakenly named Frederick Coke Smyth or Smith in some reference books.
John Richard Coke Smyth was in Constantinople from 1836-7. Some of his pictures are in the Victoria & Albert Museum, others in the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Folger Institute in Washington among others. He was distantly related to Lord Melbourne which may have been how he came to design the clothes for and paint pictures of Queen Victoria’s Ball Costume in
