Biography Francesco Stringa
Francesco Stringa worked as a court painter for the dukes of Alfonso IV and Francesco II d'Este from the second half of the 17th century. From 1661 he was the soprano of the Galleria Estense in Modena and the best possible artist. Stylistically, Stringa was strongly influenced by the naturalism of Mattia Preti, who worked in Modena in the 1650s. Above all, he was influenced by the paintings of his Emilian contemporaries (Carracci, Bonomi, Guercino, Lanfranco), whose works he studied in the Galleria Ducale. The present drawing, with the portrayal of Venus and Amor, had been the work of Francesco Stringa since its acquisition by Pierre Jean Mariette (Paris, 1694-1774).
