Biography Pierre Adolphe Valette
The French-born Impressionist painter Pierre Adolf Valette is best remembered as the tutor of L.S. Lowry and for his atmospheric street scenes of Edwardian Manchester which fill a gallery in the City Art Gallery. He trained at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux but moved to Manchester School of Art in 1907.
Lowry considered him a 'dedicated teacher' and added 'I cannot overestimate the effect on me of the coming to this drab city of Adolphe Valette, full of French Impressionism, aware of everything that was going on in Paris'. He returned to France in 1928 and settled in Blace in Beaujolais.
