Serafijn (Seraphin François) Vermote was born in the Belgian
village of Moorsele on 24 April 1788. He received his training as an
artist at the Academies of Kortrijk and Brugge.
In 1816,he was commissioned by Charles Carton de Winzele to
decorate his castle 't Hooghe in Zillebeke. That year, he spent two
months in Paris, where he mostly copied paintings.
Back in Ypres (Ieper), he is said to have studied at the Academy and
painted views of Ypres. Certainly from 1827 on, he lived in
Kortrijk, where he was appointed teacher at the Academy in 1832.
He died there on 3 April 1837. Although he painted
portraits, cityscapes, and even religious scenes, his fame today
