Charles Leander Weed was born in New York on July 17, 1824. Weed came to California via Wisconsin with the Gold Rush. By 1854 he was established in Sacramento at 66 J Street working for portrait photographer George W. Watson. He produced the first photgraphs of Yosemite and worked with publisher James M. Hutchings.
