Biography   Pieter George Westenberg


Pieter George Westenberg was born in Nijmegen in 1791.  He was a student of Jan Hulswit and became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.  In 1816-17 he undertook a journey along the Rhine and educated himself through gallery studies in France and Germany.

In 1838 Westenberg settled in Haarlem, where he was appointed director of the ‘Paviljoen Welgelegen’ collection of modern masters.  His paintings are nowadays among others to be found in the collections of the Rijksmusseum, Amsterdam, the Gemeente Museum, The Hague and in museums in Haarlem and Rotterdam.
