Biography Irma (Willard) Sompayrac
Born on a plantation near Grand Ecore in Natchitoches Parish, La., Irma Sompayrac Willard studied art at Newcomb College in New Orleans and was a member of its first graduating class in 1920.
After continuing her art studies in New York City, Willard returned to Louisiana to found, in association with Gladys Breazeale, the Natchitoches Art Colony, a school specializing in landscape painting.
She later held teaching posts at several universities and served as supervisor of art for the State Department of Education of Louisiana from 1950 to 1965.
