landscape, portrait, genre painter and caricaturist, Arthur Johnson was
born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1874 of German heritage on his mother's
side. His father was Charles F. Johnson, owner and editor of the
German/American newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio, and US Consul to
Hamburg, Germany under President Harrison.
Johnson attended a technical school in Hamburg, transferring to the
academic high school for picture arts in Berlin in 1898.
Beginning in 1902/03, he studied at the master studios for landscape
painting under A. Hertel, and spent 8 months in Rome, Italy after
winning the Michael Geer Prize.
