Helene Ruth Stephenson was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She studied Design at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts). She later studied under Elizabeth Davis Wolpert and Hobson Pittman.
Stephenson's style evolved from realism in her early years to abstract landscapes based on representation and symbolism later in her life. As an abstractionist, she is known for subject matter relating to various forms in nature, especially those concerning the oceans.
She has exhibited at the James Michener Museum, the Allentown Museum, the Pennsylvania State Museum, and Woodmere Art Museum, where her art is in the permanent collections of the latter two, as
